- Name barriers and motivators of employers supporting breastfeeding in the industries of restaurant/retail, manufacturing, health care, and education.
- Identify solutions for supporting women working in low-wage job settings.
Cathy Carothers is Co-Director of Every Mother, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing counseling and lactation training for health professionals across the United States. She is the past president and fellow of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and past chair of the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC).
She served as the national project director for many Federal breastfeeding initiatives, including the HHS Maternal and Child Health Bureau project, “The Business Case for Breastfeeding,” and the HHS Office on Women’s Health project, “Supporting Nursing Moms at Work.” She has developed national curricula on supporting nursing mothers at work which is housed at the website of the USBC. She has worked with major national business organizations to improve support for breastfeeding mothers at work, and conducted workshops in 35 states to teach breastfeeding advocates how to work effectively with the business community.
